It wouldn't be so bad if they let you know at least after it happens, I get that it was getting rid of it asap before it could possibly do any damage but at least tell us about it.

Get rid of Avast for something better like Malwarebytes + Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows Defender. Avast is an absolute garbage anti-virus.
