Figured that i'd make tutorial for changing the text since it's been used in a few mods such as Don Vecta's Rushing Beat mod and Augmented Antics's Rage in Time mod.

Like the items, the text can be replaced by creating an FPG file and inserting images named to correspond to the item it replaces.  I recommend Smart FPG Editor which personally used myself.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Graphic-Others/Smart-Fpg-Editor.shtml

The images I've uploaded here are too big to fit into the forums, and as a result in order to view the full image you might have to save it to your computer(I might go back to this tutorial and make a whole list when I get the chance. Right now i'm too busy with another tutorial).

To replace the text graphics create a FPG file named cutscenesa.fpg.  I've also found that you can edit the main characters portraits here.  The codes are on the following image:
[Tutorial]Changing the text graphics. 2016-02-19%2016_08_11-Cortana

I believe that these letters are from the name imput screen(when the player puts him his name during the options menu in SORR) Don Vecta used in his Rushing Beat mod.  To change the letters, create an FPG file named fuente.fpg and change the numbers to as followed.
[Tutorial]Changing the text graphics. 2016-02-19%2016_10_55-Microsoft%20Edge

Some more numbers Don Vecta used in his Rushing Beat mod.  These can be changed to by creating a FPG file named letrero.fpg:
[Tutorial]Changing the text graphics. Letrero

You can also change the character names along with several other things by creating an FPG file named sor.fpg:

Hi,

Just got here by chance... I am the author of Smart Fpg Editor, which I still update from time to time. The screenshots of your post show a very old version of Smart Fpg Editor, probably because you downloaded it from some strange website... The official download place was originally Google Code, but then I moved the project to Bitbucket.

You can find Smart Fpg Editor latest version in its project page (bitbucket.org / dacucar / smartfpgeditor, sorry I cannot post links) from where you can download not only the application but also the sources, as it is an open source application.

Hope you don't me me having rescued this old post but it felt right that if people are using this software they at least know where to get the most recent versions.

Thank you graylandertagger for this tutorial.

Have you FPGs with original pictures, please? It would be much easier to mod.

Thanks for that.

If you find any issues or miss some feature please open an issue in the project page, as I said, I keep updating it (and I am happy when I hear of people using it Smile). Smart Fpg Editor still works on the most recent windows for what I have seen.

So nice to see people still using my Smart Fpg Editor in 2021. When I created this program I never anticipated there would be usages outside the BennuGD community (BennuGD is the programming language that was used for SOR). I watched the youtube video and there were a couple of things that captured my attention, so I'm sharing some comments for those of you dealing with FPGs:

There are three types of FPGs: 8bits, 16bits and 32 bits. Smart Fpg Editor handles all of them. It is important to know what kind of FPG you are dealing with when you want to import images to the FPG. I don't know if all FPGs in SOR are 8bpp, but the one of the video are (you can see that in the right down corner of Smart Fpg Editor when the FPG has been opened). More on this later.

In the video, the author uses FPG Editor to export to BMP, however the ideal format to operate with is PNG. I can't think of any reason why to use anything else.
Notice it is possible to export graphics to PNG directly from Smart Fpg Editor. Not only there is a export toolbar button, but you can select all the sprites and drag & drop on the Explorer. If I remember well, drag&drop generates maps, but pressing one key (I think it was shift) will generate PNG files instead.

Now, for working with 8bpp FPGs:

* 8bpp means there is a color table of 256 color, usually called palette.
* Smart Fpg Editor will export to 8bpp PNGs when exporting the images. You can still add non 8bpp to the FPG, but they will need to go through a process called color quantization, in which Smart Fpg Editor attempts to adjust the image pixels to the palette of the FPG. This can be fine or not depending on the color set used in your image.
* All graphics in the FPG share the same palette.
* The first color in the palette is always going to be treated as transparent (this is a BennuGD thing).
* The latest released version of Smart Fpg Editor 0.55 allows you to edit palette colors of the FPG, and immediately preview changes.
* If you import a 8bpp PNG into a 8bpp FPG and they have two different color palettes, Smart Fpg Editor can just use the palette of the FPG or try to adjust the colors of the image to the target palette. That is why the options are there. The author of the video says "do not mess with this options, they don't do anything". They do, just the author doesn't know what Smile.

Knowing that, what you normally want is:

* Use an editor that supports 8bpp PNGs.
* Be conscious about the color set of your image. Keep working with the same set of 256 colors for all the images that you intend to import into the FPG.
* Always use a unique color for the first color of the palette.

There is one last thing that one needs to be aware of: Palettes in BennuGD have 256 RGB colors, but each color uses only 6bits, not 8. This has the effect that RGB(255,255,255) is the same as RGB(252,252,252) and it is an inconvenience when working with editors because it means that both colors would be interpreted the same (specially important to know for the first color of the palette).

So, when designing your color palette, pick the component value, divide by 4, truncate and multiply by 4. 252 = Truncate(256/4) * 4 (or 252 = 256 >> 2).

Having this things in mind will make your exporting/importing experience much easier.
Unfortunately Smart Fpg Editor was designed for game development, and normally it is expected certain understanding on image formats and the specifics of the BennuGD engine.

I hope I didn't create more confusion. If you have any question I'm happy to answer.

Ok. does anyone have the smartfpg editor with all the tools inside like denoiser? the one I downloaded didn't have it, and I couldn't add it.

Hi! Really Great tool but: is it possible to export image in bmp? This because denoiser support only .tga and .bmp file. Unfortunately when you install Smart fpg editor, the old Fpg edit don't work correctly and you cannot extract images anymore. But only FPG edit can extract .bmp file to use whith Denoiser.
So you have to unistall smart fpg and clean registry to recover FPG Edit to work (I'm sure that this is a bug of the old FPG edit).
Can you add fuction to Smart FPG to extract in .bmp format and extract multiple files?

Thank you so much if you can help our community.
