Unlocking Stages in Battle Mode

Morning, all. I haven't seen this addressed anywhere else, so I think I need a reminder: how exactly do you unlock the stages that are to be used in Battle Mode? I was of the view that you unlock the particular stages by going through them on the Mania level in the main game, but even after doing that, the stages still remain locked. Help? Thanks!

Some stages aren't unlockable for battle mode for specific reasons. Probably would've been better to have a separate stage select for that mode to avoid the confusion.

That doesn't even make any sense - why have them listed in the Battle Mode if they can't be unlocked?

Because it reuses the sttage select from the regular modes. That's why I said it might have been better if it had it's own stage select instead.
